What is Dru Yoga? – Gentle, flowing and powerful

Dru Yoga is a very gentle, yet powerful, form of yoga aimed at releasing stress from the body and creating optimum health on all levels. This unique style of yoga is available to anyone who would like to experience its comprehensive system of flowing subtle movements that unite the body with the mind.

Dru Yoga uses movement, imagery, concentration and breath work integrated into gentle sequences that have profound effect upon both our physical and mental processes.

These movement sequences are used successfully worldwide as detraumatisation techniques in conflict zones. They are equally effective in the corporate environment, where we are faced with challenges and stress on a daily basis.

Due to its gentle flowing style it is safe for nearly all ages, levels of experience, fitness and flexibility.

Dru Yoga is holistically and therapeutically based on creating emotional freedom, therefore programs can be specifically tailored to stress reduction.

Why Do It? 5 great reasons to do Dru Yoga

Refresh and rejuvenate the mind and body – Dru yoga stretches the mind as well as the body, creating increased focus and concentration and improved flexibility and muscle tone.

Turn stress into success – Cultivate positive emotions and clear toxic effects of stress or trauma in the body.

Learn to relax deeply at will – You know how to fly into a rage or a flap ~ learn how to flow into a calm! Release your “issues from your tissues” – Transform anxiety, fear, anger, loss or grief into energy that can be utilised by your body and your mind. The gift of the precious present – Take your mind out of the future or the past and spend more time in the present

Testimonial for Dru Yoga in schools, by Angus Macdonald

Dru Yoga Classes at Coupar Angus Primary School

Last year I approached the local primary school Head Teacher (Margaret Cameron) to see if she would be interested in offering Yoga to the children. She is a very progressive Head Teacher who has done wonders at the school since she’s been in charge and was very open to the idea. So a taster session was arranged for the three top classes of P6 & P7 to see if the kids wanted to either; do it as weekly class, a sports afternoon option or not at all. The response was a unanimous vote for a weekly class.

I combined postures into sequences around a story making it into an adventure. I also used postures, sequences and games to show them how they could change their moods from feeling bad to feeling good. Then we would end the session with a relaxation consisting of simple breathing exercises and using their imagination to help them feel better about themselves and their perception of their world.

It was such a joy to teach them… and as I soon discovered …to be taught by them. The children were so easy to work with, there was no adult reserve just a desire to have fun and learn something new. They were very well behaved, learnt quickly and made great progress. Their total playful immersion in whatever we did meant they experienced the benefits of Dru Yoga at a level that usually takes adults months or years to get to.

The biggest lesson for me was that deep down our deepest desire is to feel safe, have fun and be happy (to feel good) and it was very easy to connect with this in the kids and let the Yoga nourish it.

It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with them, so I was delighted when they asked for more Yoga next year and that another Primary School in the area (Glebe School, Scone) has also asked for it as a result of Margaret Cameron’s recommendation.

Feed Back from the Head Teacher and Children

From January to June last school year Primaries 6 and 7 were given the opportunity to engage in Yoga exercises.

After an initial taster session the children decided that they would like to have this experience on a regular basis. Mr Macdonald was very patient with the children and helped them to benefit in many ways from yoga. The children’s evaluations demonstrate very effectively the benefits they felt.

Children’s evaluations:

When you had a bad thing on your mind it helped you get over it. (Jimmy)
It made you feel less tense and cranky. (Stuart)
It made me feel relaxed and I thought it was fun. (Dale)
It made me feel like I was having fun. (Emma)
It made everything in the room seem peaceful and calm. (James C)
The games made you active and ready for anything. (Callum McH)
It made me feel like I was in my own world. (Louise)
It makes your body feel calm and soothed. (Gemma)
When something bad happened then it was good because you got it out of your mind. (Rebecca)
It made all your bad thoughts and worries disappear and everything was happy and jolly. (Beth)
It made me feel like I was in a different place. (Rachel)
It made me feel like my muscles are relaxed and if something is troubling you forgot about it. (Kirsty)
I liked yoga because it was very relaxing and peaceful.
